There is no question that times have been tough for our locally owned small businesses, and it looks like there is no end in sight. However, if you haven’t already heard, The Wall Street Journal wants to celebrate and promote the small business that found a way to power through these tough times by doing something creative, imaginative or cutting-edge with their business model in order to stay afloat and survive, and possibly even thrive. They are seeking applicants for its “Small Business, Big Innovation” competition for America’s entrepreneurs.
This contest is open to any independently owned small business that has less than 500 employees (well, I guess we could argue whether a business with 500 employees is a small business, but anyway….) What I love about this competition is that the public will be able to vote for entries posted on the website to choose the “Readers’ Choice” winner. I think the public is in a much better position to vote on these outstanding businesses rather than editors who likely have never owned, worked for, used or shopped at a locally owned small business.
So all small businesses if you believe you fit into this category go ahead and fill out the application. The deadline to apply is September 5th. And for the rest, be sure to vote between September 12-30 for your favorite entry!
